ABSTRACT

Objective. To evaluate the sensitivity and specificity of Rohrer’s ponderal index (PI) in diagnosis of intrauterine growth retardation in the newborn (NB).
Subjects and methods. 268 healthy neonates from 38 to 42 weeks, with appropiate weight for gestation age were studied. In all of them weight, length, head circumference, mid arm circumference (MAC) and tricipital skinfold thickness (TST) were measurement. They were considered undernourished those that presented three clinical data of corporal consumption at least and with their anthropometric data PI was calculated.
Results. According to the clinical evaluation 166 (62%) of them had normal nutritional status and 102 (38%) malnutrition; of these last ones 67 (66%) they were identified with intrauterine malnutrition. The sensitivity was 0.65 and specificity 0.93.
Conclusions. Considering clinical evaluation as a gold standard of term NB with more than 2.5 kg, the PI is useful to identify those neonates that are truly weill nourished but its sensitivity was low.
