ABSTRACT

Introduction: Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy is a common procedure whose main indication is to provide long-term nutritional support in patients with insufficient oral intake and functional gastrointestinal tract. The complications of its insertion can be divided into minor and major, among the latter is the buried bumper syndrome. Clinical case: A case of an 85-year-old female patient who was diagnosed with this syndrome is presented. The patient started with outflow of perigastrostomal purulent material and intermittent difficulty for passing the enteral formula. She was diagnosed and treated endoscopically. Conclusion: Buried bumper syndrome is a rare entity that can occur in any patient with a gastrostomy, it is necessary to be aware of this complication in order to carry out an adequate differential diagnosis. Its treatment is not standardized and depends mainly on the severity of the condition.
