ABSTRACT
Introduction: pyrotechnic burns in pediatric patients are very common situations during holidays in Mexico and their management is usually complex since tissue damage is different in these burns due to the explosion factor. The use of dermal matrices is a therapy used in burn patients; in the case of vacuum assisted closure (VAC) therapy, it is used for the management of multiple types of wounds. The use of the combination of these two therapies is not so frequent, and to our knowledge there are no previous reported cases of the use of these therapies in pyrotechnic burns in the cephalic region.
Objective: to present the evolution of a patient with pyrotechnics burns after being treated with a combination of dermal matrices and VAC therapy.
Clinical case: 7-year-old male patient with a burn in the right temporal area, as a result of the explosion of a firework. In a first intervention the Integra
® brand dermal matrix was used, in a second intervention another MatriDerm
® brand dermal matrix was used in conjunction with VAC therapy, having a favorable evolution in terms of functionality after one year of follow-up.
Conclusion: the timely and adequate management of pyrotechnic burns can bring us favorable results for the function. In our case, the use of combined therapy allowed the adequate integration of the grafts.
