ABSTRACT

Medical educators consider that clinical exposure should be taught mainly during clinical rotations. Early clinical exposure teaching strategies such as activities that correlate clinical concepts with basic subjects facilitate understanding of these subjects and allow the development of clinical reasoning skills. This study pretends to generate evidence of the perception of medical students about this teaching method. This study was conducted in 146 students from the University of Sonora enrolled in the practical histology course. Clinical correlation activities that included images and clinical cases for group discussion were introduced to the syllabus. A survey on 5-point Likert scale was applied to obtain quantitative and qualitative information about the intervention. The quantitative results were tabulated and the qualitative results analyzed thematically; 117 students participated in the survey (80.14%). The quantitative results reflected an elevated level of satisfaction (›90%) about 5 activity factors evaluated in the survey: instruction adequacy, thematic content, feedback, clinical integration and external repercussion. Qualitative results revealed that more than half of the participants (65.8%) had positive perceptions about the didactic, motivational and cognitive utility of this strategy. Early clinical exposure seems a promising teaching strategy to improve clini- cal reasoning and motivation in medical training. It is suggested to address challenges in this methodology such as clear instructions about clinical topics and a significant study sample for optimal implementation.
