ABSTRACT

Introduction: Biological risk assessment is a priority for health and pharmaceutical workers handling biological agents.
Objective: Evaluate the biological risk in the manipulation of Staphylococcus aerues in the Molecular Biology laboratory of the University of La Rioja.
Method: A descriptive study was conducted with a mixed approach. The analysis of biological risks was carried out through a systematic study of the subject. A flowchart of the tasks related to the handling of the strains and an inventory to identify the hazards were drawn up. A qualitative and a quantitative matrix were used as part of risk management. The risk assessment included six stages.
Results: The evaluation and risk management facilitated the description of the tasks where the strain is handled. 22 risks were identified. 13 of them were considered as high, which were classified as unacceptable; 4 as moderate (tolerable), 4 as low (acceptable) and one as insignificant (negligible). Aerosol formation was the greatest risk identified. The risks were communicated to the laboratory personnel. The action plan included 13 corrective actions, and staff training was the main measure proposed. The risks review was planned according to the proposed action plan.
Conclusions: It is important to know a priori the occupational risks faced with their actions by personnel when handling strains of microorganisms, which, generally, can be preventable. Therefore, analyzing and managing biological risks in places where strains of Sthaphylococcus auerus are managed acquires significant value, because this guarantees the safety, not only of the workers who perform these tasks, but also that of their families, the community and the environment in general.
