ABSTRACT

Introduction: aspiration of gastric contents is a serious complication of anesthesia. Identifying patients at risk is a pillar of safe anesthetic practice using new tools to comply with the above, such as the assessment of gastric contents by ultrasound. Material and methods: prospective study in which the volume of gastric contents was evaluated by two independent ultrasonographers and the volume aspirated by gastroscopy was subsequently measured in patients with elective endoscopy. A weighted κ index was performed to assess interobserver variability; subsequently, the average volume obtained from both ultrasonographers was correlated with the volume aspirated by endoscopy. Results: gastric content was evaluated by ultrasound in 58 patients scheduled for endoscopy, finding a weighted κ index of 0.7377 between both ultrasonographers. A correlation of 0.977 was found between the average of both ultrasonographers and the volume aspirated by endoscopy. Conclusions: the measurement of gastric content by ultrasound has a good correlation with what is aspirated in endoscopy, confirming ultrasound as another tool within the pre-anesthetic assessment.
