ABSTRACT
Introduction: keratoconus is a corneal ectasia that leads to a rapid decline in visual acuity, predominantly affecting young patients. Penetrating keratoplasty is the most commonly used treatment for severe cases, yielding favorable outcomes. The aim of this study is to describe the visual results in patients who underwent penetrating keratoplasty for keratoconus.
Material and methods: observational, descriptive, cross-sectional, retrospective study. 10 records of patients postoperative with penetrating keratoplasty for keratoconus at the San Juan del Río General Hospital from 2020-2023 were reviewed. The variables studied were sex, age, cornea, visual acuity and visual impairment.
Results: the male sex and the age group of 19-23 years predominated. In the evaluation prior to the procedure, severe visual acuities were presented with perception of hand movement, counting fingers at one meter, two meters and 20/800, which is equivalent to a great visual deficiency. All had favorable post-surgical optical results, with an improvement in visual impairment from a minimum of 8% to a maximum of 38%.
Conclusions: penetrating keratoplasty effectively improved visual impairment in keratoconus patients, transitioning them from legal blindness to moderate visual disability. Ongoing follow-up and collaboration with ophthalmology are crucial for corneal preservation and management, enhancing patients' quality of life, and promoting organ and tissue donation and transplantation.
