ABSTRACT
Introduction: Chronic otitis media is a prolonged inflammation of the middle ear
mucosa and mastoid space, causing recurrent otorrhea and hearing impairment. Its
overall prevalence varies between 1-46%, gaining clinical importance due to its
complications. Surgery is the treatment of choice to avoid complications and restore
functionality.
Objectives: To evaluate the impact of type II tympanoplasty with
upward wall mastoidectomy on pre- and post-surgical audiological outcomes in patients
with chronic otitis media.
Materials and methods: Patients with a diagnosis
of chronic otitis media who underwent type II tympanoplasty with wall-up mastoidectomy
were included. A descriptive analysis by means of numerical and graphical
methods was performed by collecting medical records. Analyses were performed
with Stata 14.
Results: During the period evaluated, 49 procedures were performed.
Concerning the audiological results, the analysis of these was based on the
total number of people who had reported pre- and post-surgical PTA (n=9). Where
55.56% of the cases had a reduction of the PTA value post-surgery, the median absolute
difference of the pure tone average (PTA) was -8.75 dB. The median percentage
change of post-surgical PTA was -44.44.
Conclusions: We found that there was a
significant improvement in audiological outcomes in a significant percentage of the
population studied. Despite the small sample size, we obtained important results and
comparable to several studies in the literature.
