Methods: A development research was carried out in the period 2017-2021. Theoretical-methodological workshops were held, in which the particularities of competitive benchmarking and the study of processes study were considered. For its validation, two researches were carried out, which provided empirical evidence of the effectiveness of the created procedure.
Results: The proposed procedure includes the identification of the processes to be improved, the self-study at the institutional level, the benchmark identification, the benchmark study, and the integration of the improvements based on the outcomes.
Conclusions: The application of novel approaches for quality improvement allows to respond to the complexity of the problems faced by health systems and services today. The integration of competitive benchmarking and the study of processes is an effective perspective for these purposes.
