Leukocyte glucose index as a prognostic marker for peritonitis associated with peritoneal dialysis

ABSTRACT
Introduction: dialysis-associated peritonitis (DAP) is a common
and serious complication. The leukocyte‑glucose index (LGI) has
proven useful as a prognostic marker in various pathologies and
could be a valuable tool for predicting DAP, thereby improving clinical
decision‑making.
Objective: to establish the association between LGI and the development
of DAP..
Materials and methods: acase–control study was conducted in
49 patients at Ministry of Health hospitals in Mexico City who presented
with dialysis urgency and underwent placement of their first dialysis
catheter. LGI was measured on admission, and its association
with subsequent development of DAP was evaluated. Proportions
were analyzed using Fisher’s exact test, median LGI and hospital
length of stay (LOS) with the Mann–Whitney U test, and means with
Student’s t-test.
Results: a positive LGI was more frequent in the group that developed
DAP (33.5%
vs. 4%, p = 0.019), with an odds ratio of 7.08
(95% CI: 1.4–34.3). The median LGI in cases was 1.15 compared to
0.73 in controls (p ‹ 0.05). Differences were also observed in LOS
and catheter replacement rates.
Conclusions: LGI is significantly associated with the development
of DAP and may serve as a useful prognostic marker for predicting
clinical outcomes in these patients.
