ABSTRACT
Introduction: oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma, which includes base of the tongue cancer, has variable survival rates depending on the location and metastatic status, with human papilloma virus (HPV) present in 80% of cases and serotypes 16, 18, 31, and 45 as risk factors.
Objectives: to evaluate the relationship between oral HPV infection and survival in patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue, considering the methodological quality and risk of bias in the available studies.
Material and methods: a systematic review of studies published in databases such as PubMed and SciELO was carried out until December 2021, selecting those that analyzed patients with tongue cancer and HPV detection, excluding studies without anatomical differentiation or comparability.
Results: twelve studies with a total of 77,649 patients were included, of which 10 showed a possible improvement in survival in HPV-positive patients, although methodological limitations and risk of bias were identified.
Conclusions: these findings could influence the treatment of squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue, but further studies are needed to assess the impact of vaccination status and other prognostic factors.
