ABSTRACT

Introduction: organ and tissue donation are one of the most significant advances in modern medicine, allowing for improved quality of life for many individuals. Although it is an altruistic act that can save multiple lives, Mexico faces a shortage of donations due to systemic issues, healthcare personnel attitudes, and public misinformation. The attitude and knowledge of medical staff are key to promoting donation; however, there are still deficiencies in training and information. Material and methods: a quantitative study was conducted at the hospital using surveys administered to various types of personnel (doctors, nurses, administrative staff, etc.) between August 2024 and January 2025. The survey consisted of 10 questions, and the data were analyzed using percentages to understand attitudes and levels of knowledge. Results: the majority of staff members are familiar with the concept of donation and consider it ethical and vital for saving lives. A total of 73.7% feel comfortable discussing the topic with families, yet 80.3% believe that there is insufficient information available at the hospital. Only half of the healthcare personnel have received training on donation, although many expressed interests in learning more. Most are willing to support donation if requested by a family member. The general perception is that the transplant process in Mexico requires improvement. According to the staff, the population in Zacatecas also lacks awareness regarding donation. Respondents suggested awareness campaigns, better training, increased transparency, and debunking myths as strategies to promote donation. While most healthcare personnel have a favorable attitude, family refusal remains a significant barrier and has increased in recent years. Conclusions: it is imperative to strengthen the training of healthcare personnel, improve access to accurate information, and promote educational campaigns to increase organ and tissue donations. Doing so will help save more lives, reduce barriers, and enhance the transplant system in Mexico and specifically in Zacatecas.
