Assessment of the professional pedagogical competence of the Nursing student tutor during on-the-job education

ABSTRACT
Introduction: The professional pedagogical competence of the tutor of Nursing students constitutes an essential basic pillar to enhance education at work in health work entities.Objective: To evaluate the professional pedagogical competence of the tutors of Nursing students in health entities.
Methods: A cross-sectional quantitative quasi-experimental research was carried out, based on a sample of 24 tutors employed in the health entities where the Nursing students of the Technical University of Babahoyo in Ecuador carry out their job training, assuming a random sampling simple (15.0% of the population). The tutors' performance observation method and the chi-square test were used.
Results: It was possible to verify the existence of significant improvements in the professional pedagogical performance of the tutors of Nursing students in the fulfillment of their role as educators from the teaching - assistance - education at work unit.
Conclusions: The pedagogical professional competence that should distinguish the training role of the Nursing student's tutor is suggested. It is recognized that in the tutors to whom the proposal was developed, significant improvements were observed in their role as trainers, that is, in the educational teaching work that they performed, demonstrating pedagogical leadership, improvements in teaching-learning, educational and direction methods of the scientific activity (degree work); that they performed with the Nursing students during their training in education at work.
