ABSTRACT
Introduction: acute kidney injury (AKI) is a common complication in cardiovascular surgery, associated with increased morbidity, mortality, prolonged Intensive Care Unit (ICU) stays, and higher healthcare costs.
Material and methods: this retrospective study analyzed 843 patients who underwent cardiovascular surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass at the Cardiovascular Hospital of Cundinamarca between 2018 and 2022, excluding those with prior renal replacement therapy (RRT).
Results: the incidence of AKI was 15.1%, and 20.3% of cases required RRT. Mortality reached 25% in AKI patients and 61.5% in those requiring RRT. The median ICU stay was five days.
Conclusions: AKI patients required RRT more frequently than reported in the literature. Further studies are needed to identify risk factors to prevent AKI and RRT.
