ABSTRACT

Objective: To determine patients’ attitudes toward organ donation.
Materials and Methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted in a medical unit of the Mexican Social Security Institute. Patients of any religion, marital status, or educational level, and of both sexes and aged 18 to 45 years, were included. Attitudes toward organ donation were assessed using a 21-item questionnaire validated with a Cronbach's alpha coefficient of 0.87. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics in SPSS v24.
Results: A total of 204 patients were evaluated: 95 men and 109 women with a median age of 32 years. Seventy-five percent were Catholic, 51.5% were single, and 38.7% had a high school education. Of those evaluated, 52.9% showed a favorable attitude toward organ donation, while 47.1% expressed an unfavorable attitude. Consistent with the culture of donation, 40.2% reported being completely in favor of promoting donation. Regarding religious beliefs, 37.3% totally disagreed with the following statement: 38.9% agreed that it is distressing to think that they will have an accident and that, if they are donors, they will receive poor care.
Conclusions: More than half of the patients had a favorable attitude toward organ donation. The culture of donation continues to strengthen.
