ABSTRACT
Introduction: the irritative fibroma is a reactive hyperplasia of fibrous connective tissue caused by local irritation or damage, so it is not considered a true neoplasm. Its growth depends on the stimulus that provokes it; this means that in the absence of a stimulus, growth stops. The size of the growth is generally smaller than 1.5 cm; however, there are some reported cases measuring 4-6 cm. Its etiology is due to trauma, friction, or constant rubbing, associated with biting, defective or overhanging restorations, and poorly fitting dental prostheses.
Objective: to report the case of a fibroma of irregular size, considered as giant. To present its clinical and histological characteristics.
Case presentation: a clinical case is presented of a 50-year-old female patient with a volume increase of 10 years of evolution in the right buccal region, spherical in shape, approximately 10 cm in diameter, slow growth, with a coloration similar to that of the adjacent mucosa and mild pain during chewing. It was identified as an irritative fibroma with a prior histopathological diagnosis, and an effective surgical treatment was carried out.
