ABSTRACT

Introduction: one of the sustainable development goals is to reduce maternal mortality ratio to under 70/per 100,000 living births in each country before 2030. Objective: analyze the maternal mortality ratio from 2016 to 2023 in the Mexican state of Guanajuato. Material and methods: this study was designed as an ecological study of trends. Data were obtained from the databases of the Ministry of Health from Mexico and Guanajuato state. The variables under analysis were age, year of death, death cause, and place of occurrence. For the statistical analysis, the maternal mortality ratio was calculated for each year and compared with the sustainable development goal of 70/per 100,000 living births. Results: the maternal mortality ratios in Guanajuato state from 2016 to 2023 complied with the ratio of sustainable development goal of 70/per 100,000 living births (p < 0.05). Hemorrhage was the chief cause of maternal mortality. Meanwhile, preeclampsia/eclampsia was no longer the most frequent cause of death in 2022-2023. Conclusion: the maternal mortality ratio remains low in Guanajuato state since the Strengthening Strategy of Care of the Obstetric Net strategy implementation was successful. During 2020 and 2021, there were increments, but they were likely due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
