ABSTRACT

Introduction: in 30-50% of patients with periodontal disease, furcation involvement can be found, which is very difficult to completely debride due to its morphology. Objectives: to present the different classifications, diagnostic methods, treatments of furcation lesions and the prognoses of the existing approaches. Material and methods: the search was made in the PubMed database with the crossword "furcation", "etiology", "classification", "treatment", "scalling and root planning", "open flap debridement", "furcplasty", "tunneling", "hemisection", "amputation", "extraction" and "prognosis". Results: the determining factor for furcation involvement is dental plaque (biofilm) and a clinical and radiographic analysis is necessary for its correct diagnosis. There are different treatments such as scaling and root planing, debridement flap, furcation plasty, tunneling, hemisection, amputation, extraction and regenerative treatments, and their choice depends mainly on the degree of furcation involvement and its location. The prognosis between 4 and 30.8 years depends on the approach used and ranges from 35 to 100%. Conclusions: there are different treatments for furcations. The correct choice of this can improve the long-term prognosis of the affected tooth.
