ABSTRACT

The presence and development of abscesses are rare and fatal complications of malignant colonic perforation. A case of a 48-year-old male patient diagnosed and treated for a retroperitoneal abscess secondary to a colorectal tumor perforated is shown. For this patient, the approach consisted of drainage through a fasciotomy and subsequent diverting colostomy. The retroperitoneum is a space with underestimated clinical relevance and its relationship with colon cancer represents a challenge with interesting surgical implications that encourage health personnel to carefully review the contiguous structures in malignant colonic perforation, considering the possible presence of other complications such as abscess formation associated with contamination due to perforation of this advanced cancer.
