Teaching tool to develop competencies in teaching management in the Medicine career

ABSTRACT

Background: the description of competencies to manage the teaching process in the Medicine career, the correspondence between their knowledge, performance criteria and monitoring evidences require attention from academic directors and professors.
Objective: to design a teaching tool to develop competencies in teaching management in the Medicine career based on the teaching structure proposed by Rodríguez and other authors.
Methods: a descriptive study with a mixed approach was conducted at the University of Medical Sciences in Holguín from September 2017 to 2023. Analysis-synthesis, inductive-deductive, historical-logical and systemic structural-functional approach were used as theoretical methods; documentary review, questionnaire for teachers, interviews and critical reflection workshops were used as empirical ones.
Results: cognitive, attitudinal and procedural dimensions of the competencies to manage the teaching process were explored. The greatest difficulties were found in the cognitive and procedural aspects. Interviewees expressed the need to train novice teachers in pedagogical topics due to their lack of familiarity with the governing documents, difficulties in developing methodological work as well as difficulty in handling teaching management methods. Therefore, a teaching tool was designed applying the four basic elements of the teaching structure of Rodríguez and contributors. Performance criteria and monitoring evidences were compiled.
Conclusions: knowledge and skill gaps were identified in the teaching and methodological areas. The designed structure was assessed as a contextualized tool that could be used for continuous improvement among teaching staff.
