Postoperative complications in abdominoplasty after massive weight loss and strategies to prevent them

ABSTRACT

Obesity is a prevalent public health condition that may require bariatric procedures for treatment. In recent years, its incidence has increased, leaving a significant excess of skin—particularly in the abdominal region—as a sequela, affecting patient functionality and self-esteem, and increasing demand for post-bariatric procedures abdominoplasty being of them. As the number of procedures increases, complications are expected to rise which is why we performed a systematic review describing the most common complications. We analyzed risk factors, and issued evidence-level recommendations for prevention, specifically associated with abdominoplasty in patients after massive weight loss. The objective is to provide a comprehensive overview of the most common complications associated with abdominoplasty in patients who have experienced significant weight loss.
