ABSTRACT

Objective. To describe the consumption of recommended and non-recommended food groups for daily intake and their association with sociodemographic characteristics in the Mexican population. Materials and methods. Data from the Encuesta Nacional de Salud y Nutrición Continua 2020-2024 were used, employing a 7-day food frequency questionnaire in the Mexican population. Tertiles of consumption in grams of eight food groups were estimated by population groups and their association with sociodemographic characteristics was analyzed using ordinal logistic regression models. Results. Consumption of fruits, vegetables, and legumes was very low in all age groups. Living in the southern and central regions was associated with a higher likelihood of being in the highest tertiles of fruit and vegetable consumption, and a lower likelihood of consuming legumes and processed meats. In urban areas, there was a higher likelihood of consuming processed meats. Conclusion. The population in the southern and central regions had higher consumption of recommended foods.
