ABSTRACT

Introduction: intensive care unit-acquired weakness (ICU-ACW) is a frequent complication in critically ill adults, with an incidence of approximately 40%. This condition can compromise peripheral muscle function (PMF), resulting in alterations or deficiencies in body structure and function, impacting mobility and functional independence, worsening the PMF profile, and negatively affecting healthcare costs and quality of life. Material and methods: a non-systematic review of the literature published between 2015 and 2025 was conducted in six databases, using the corresponding MeSH terms for adult, intensive care, musculoskeletal, weakness, and muscle atrophy. Information was extracted and synthesized, describing the conventional tests or measures used in the assessment process, their characteristics, the components evaluated, and their relationship to functional domains. Results: nineteen tests or measures with limited and incomplete coverage of PMF components were identified. Conclusions: clinical practice requires the strategic inclusion and integration of tests or measures to comprehensively consider the components of musculoskeletal disorders and their relationship to structural-functional impairments, activity limitations, and participation restrictions.
