ABSTRACT

Introduction: dental fluorosis is endemic in several regions of Mexico, including eight municipalities within the state of the same name. Objectives: to determine the prevalence of dental fluorosis in the resident population of this region and to assess the diagnostic capacity of the dentists who have treated these cases. Material and methods: a survey was conducted with 150 first-year students enrolled in the Dentistry program at UNAM FES Iztacala to assess whether they had been informed by their dentists about the presence of this condition, and the responses were verified by three independent dentists. Results: the overall prevalence of fluorosis was found to be 36.0%, rising to 52.6% in the five municipalities identified as high-risk areas. Conclusions: the rate of dental fluorosis is higher in municipalities with elevated fluoride levels, and diagnostic deficiencies are observed among the dentists who have attended to this population.
