ABSTRACT

Introduction: although technological solutions offer promising methods for participation and decisionmaking aimed at improving transfusion strategies, especially in the hospital setting, when working on donation projects driven by altruism, it is essential to promote donor retention, strengthen blood component reserves, raise public awareness, and consolidate strategies that ensure a safe blood supply for the entire population. Objective: to describe an altruistic donation program in a state in central Mexico and its current scope. Material and methods: information on the altruistic donation program was extracted from historical data of transfusion medicine centers participating in the «Blood for All» project from 2016 to 2025. Records of pre-donors and altruistic donors were included in the descriptive analysis. Results: since 2016, the General Hospital of León, Mexico, has integrated an altruistic blood donation strategy to maintain an adequate, constant, and reliable supply, guaranteeing care for patients treated in the center’s medical departments. These efforts led to the creation of a voluntary blood donation program. The team used a comprehensive strategy to attract new altruistic donors and foster donor loyalty and regularity. This resulted in nine campaigns between 2016 and 2025, leading to an increase in blood availability. Conclusion: building a blood donor base is a significant challenge. Engaging healthcare professionals and patients as donors and strengthening altruistic donations are key to increasing donations and ensuring a safe blood supply.
