ABSTRACT

Body dysmorphic disorder is the most common psychiatric condition found at the interface between plastic surgery and psychiatry. Its main feature is an obsessive preoccupation with an imagined or minimally perceptible defect, which not only affects quality of life, but also doubles the risk of suicide attempts. Even though it was described over a century ago, it has become more evident in the past two decades, due to the impact of social media on body image perception in contemporary society. Its etiology is multifactorial, involving biological, psychological and sociocultural factors. While definitive diagnosis must be made by a psychiatrist, the plastic surgeon is often the first point of contact and must identify the condition through targeted history-taking and screening tools. Early diagnosis is crucial to avoid futile surgical procedures and to ensure appropriate referral to mental health services. Raising awareness within the medical community enhances its knowledge and provides guidance for its management.
