Excimer laser: an underestimated tool in the therapeutic arsenal for alopecia areata

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Alopecia areata (AA) is a non-scarring autoimmune disorder characterized by sudden hair loss and significant impairment of quality of life. Despite multiple available therapies, many patients experience incomplete responses or frequent relapses, highlighting the need for effective and safe alternatives. The 308-nm excimer laser has emerged as a promising non-pharmacological option.
METHODS: We report two pediatric cases of refractory alopecia areata treated with weekly 308-nm excimer laser therapy, with progressive dose escalation according to clinical tolerance.
RESULTS: Both patients achieved clinically significant hair regrowth with 12 to 17 weekly sessions up to a maximum of 300 mJ/cm².
CONCLUSIONS: The 308-nm excimer laser is a safe, effective, and accessible therapeutic alternative for pediatric patients with refractory alopecia areata, offering a valuable option to reduce reliance on systemic therapies.
