ABSTRACT

Objective. To estimate the prevalence of interpersonal violence in the past 12 months, the proportion of events in which aggressors and victims consumed alcohol or other substances, and its association with sociodemographic and mental health characteristics in the Mexican population. Materials and methods. We conducted a cross-sectional analysis using data from the 2025 National Survey on Drug, Alcohol and Tobacco Consumption among people aged 12-65 years. We estimated prevalences and 95% confidence intervals and fitted Poisson regression models with robust variance to obtain adjusted prevalence ratios. Results. The prevalence of any interpersonal violence was higher in women (13.9%) than in men (10.7%). Among those who reported violence, in 31.2% of events the aggressor had consumed substances; victim’s substance use during the episode was more frequent in men than in women. Violence was associated with being a woman, an adolescent, not having a conjugal union, residing in Mexico City, South Central or South region, consuming drugs or alcohol, psychological discomfort, suicidal ideation and not receiving mental health treatment. Conclusions. Interpersonal violence associated with substance use shows sex-differentiated profiles, supporting integrated interventions that combine violence prevention, substance use regulation and mental health care.
