Lipocalin-2 in gingival crevicular fluid as a potential biomarker for periodontitis.

ABSTRACT
Introduction: periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease induced by oral microbiota dysbiosis with a high prevalence. Increased lipocalin 2 (LCN2) has been found in patients with periodontitis, so it could be a biomarker and play a key role in its pathogenesis. Current clinical evidence is still limited and has not been investigated in a mexican population.
Objective: to determine LCN2 concentrations in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) in Mexicans with periodontitis.
Material and methods: a cross-sectional observational study was conducted from March 2024 to March 2025. Forty individuals were recruited from the Endoperiodontology Clinic, FES-Iztacala, UNAM. After selection according to inclusion and exclusion criteria, they were divided into a healthy group (n = 6) and a group with stage III, grade B generalized periodontitis (n = 11). The GCL was collected, and LCN2 concentrations were quantified by ELISA.
Results: the periodontitis group had significantly increased LCN2 levels in the GCL, and these LCN2 levels were positively correlated with periodontal pocket depth and the level of clinical gingival attachment.
Conclusion: LCN2 concentrations are associated with periodontal destruction in Mexicans with stage III, grade B periodontitis.
