Mesenteric oxygen saturation values measured by NIRS in healthy newborns during fasting, feeding, and postprandial periods

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) enables non-invasive assessment of neonatal tissue oxygenation. Mesenteric oxygen saturation may help detect intestinal hypoperfusion and prevent conditions such as necrotizing enterocolitis; however, reference values in healthy neonates remain undefined. This study aims to establish these values according to feeding status and assess their physiological variability. Objective: to determine the values for mesenteric oxygen saturation in healthy neonates using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS), comparing fasting, feeding, and postprandial states. Material and methods: a cross-sectional study with serial measurements was conducted on 37 healthy neonates at Hospital Español in México. Mesenteric oxygen saturation was measured at three time points: fasting, during feeding, and postprandial. Data were analyzed using descriptive and comparative statistics. Results: mean mesenteric oxygen saturation values were 75.7 ± 12.3% in fasting, 70.4 ± 10.1% during feeding, and 71.4 ± 9.5% postprandial. A significant decrease was observed during feeding (p ‹ 0.05), with partial recovery postprandial. Conclusions: significant variations in mesenteric oxygen saturation were identified in healthy neonates across different feeding phases, with a decrease during feeding and partial recovery afterward. These findings allow for the establishment of preliminary reference values under physiological conditions. NIRS measurement emerges as a non-invasive tool with potential clinical utility for early detection of mesenteric hypoxia, prevention of necrotizing enterocolitis, and hemodynamic monitoring in other neonatal scenarios.
