ABSTRACT
Introduction: surgical treatment of hepatic hydatid cysts
continues to be the procedure with the best results. The
main complication of hydatid cysts is communication with
the bile duct. Most of cystobiliary communications are
occult, and a smaller percentage are frank. The latter are
usually wide, allowing hydatid material to pass into the
bile duct. Liver resections resolve this complication and
simultaneously complete the treatment of the cyst.
Material
and methods: demographic and clinical-surgical data were
collected from patients who underwent right hepatectomy
for hepatic hydatidosis with frank communication with
the bile duct.
Results: three patients underwent surgery in
the last 10 years. Two of the right hepatectomies included
biliary tract exploration via choledochotomy, and one
included an associated transduodenal papillotomy. In
both cases, the lesions were due to hydatid contents
within the main bile duct. There were no complications or
mortality.
Conclusion: liver resections for hydatid cysts
with cystobiliary communication are a safe procedure that
completely resolves the disease.
