ABSTRACT

Premature rupture of membranes is one of the most common and controversial problems present in obstetrics. The precision of non-invasive and available diagnostic tests limit timely treatment. The objective of this study is to compare the sensibility and specificity of crystallography and nitrazine paper with human vaginal gonadotropin chorionic hormone (hGC) to diagnose rupture. Methods: We performed a study of diagnostic test, transverse, prolective, and comparative in pregnant women with 20 weeks or more of gestation, with suspicion of premature rupture of membranes (PROM), at the ABC Medical Center, during the period of February 1st to August 30, 2006. Crystallography, nitrazine paper and vaginal qualitative gonadotropin test were perdormed. Results: 70 patients with suspicion of rupture were entered. Nitrazine paper had sensibility of 78.9% and specificity of 53.8%. Crystallography showed sensibility of 75.4% and specificity of 76.9%. Vaginal qualitative hGC had sensibility of 87.7% and specificity of 100%. Conclusions: Vaginal qualitative gonadotropin is more sensitive and more specific than crystallography and the nitrazine paper. It is a low cost test, easy to perform, and enables us to diagnose rupture.
