ABSTRACT

Objective: To present our results with the surgical treatment of Nonspecific Chronic Ulcerative Colitis (NCUC) by means of a proctocolectomy with J reservoir.
Setting: Third level health care hospital.
Design: Retrospective, transversal, descriptive, and open study.
Patients and methods: The study was performed from February 1991 to March 2001 at the General Surgery Service of the National Medical Center “La Raza”. From the clinical records, we studied age, gender, clinical symptoms, study methodology, surgical treatment, morbidity and mortality.
Results: Twenty-one patients were studied during this period, 12 women and 9 men. Average age was 34.7 years. Clinical symptoms were diarrhea in 100% of the patients, rectal hemorrhage in 90.4%. The study protocol consisted of abdominal and chest X-rays in all patients, colonoscopy in the 21 patients with biopsy. All patients were subjected to surgery consisting of mucosectomy with ileoanastomosis with J reservoir and temporal loop ileostomy. Complications occurred in 7 (33.3%) patients, mortality was of 4.7%. Average follow-up was of 8 years.
Conclusion: NCUC is an uncommon disease in our milieu, with a 0.15% frequency of surgical treated patients. It predominates in women, with an average age of presentation of 34.7 years.
