ABSTRACT

The existence of human dangerous pathogens has been documented for centuries. However, it was not until the 20th century that biosafety standards regarding the secure manipulation of pathogens in Biosecurity Laboratories Level 3 and 4 were established. These laboratories include specific work practice controls, equipment and security measures that generate an adequate and safe environment for the health care worker. As Clinical Pathologists, we have the responsibility to know the general premises of this issue in order to protect workers and ourselves against the health effects of exposure to risky pathogens.
