ABSTRACT

Aphaeresis is a key element for patients undergoing any type of transplant. Several types of cellular separators have been developed. They follow the same process: extraction, centrifugation, compilation and reinfusion. Aphaeresis separators have allowed us to obtain from a single donor multiple components, such as plasma, platelets, erythrocyte concentrates and stem cells.
There is a wide variety of aphaeresis separators. Some include constant flow, discontinuous flow, single venous access, double venous access, continuous separation and discontinuous separation.
At our central blood bank we currently perform 6,000 aphaeresis procedures annually, in order to cover the platelets needs of 14 medical facilities. We also perform 500 Rh negative erythrocyte concentrates: of these, 49 are special phenotypes used to prepare the Panel or known phenotype eritrocytes, which are then sent to 140 hospitals to address transfusional needs of patients who sometimes develop irregular antibodies.
