ABSTRACT

Objective. To determine the pulmonary CO transfer (DLCO) in patients with prior history of pulmonary embolism (PE).
Setting. An ICU of a teaching hospital in Mexico City.
Design. A case series study.
Patients. We studied ten patients (mean age 44.9 ± 14.2 years) with a high probability diagnosis of PE with a follow-up of a year or longer.
Interventions. Arterial blood gases, DLCO, echocardiogram, electrocardiogram and treadmill stress test were performed. DLCO ‹ 80% was defined as low. Stastical analysis: Man-Whitney’s U test.
Results. The follow-up was of 6.6 ± 4 years and four patients were treatead with Greenfield filter. The mean DLCO was 79 ± 12% and it was low in six patients.
Conclusions. DLCO is found low after a year in patients with prior history of pulmonary embolism.
