Team Based Learning as teaching support in intern medicine

ABSTRACT

Background: The traditional method of the teaching of medicine has been the class, which is considered inadequate although it is used in most of the Mexican schools. A new system, the Team Based Learning (TBL), is advantageously applied in American universities, so much in basic as clinical areas and even in postdegree.
Objectives: To introduce the model of cooperative learning in its modality Team Based Learning (TBL), to Medicine students of Clinical area and to evaluate its answer towards the proposed educative model.
Material and Methods: A learning system based on the team work in an electrocardiography class for students of a medicine school was implemented. A survey was carried out among the students, to evaluate the effectiveness of the method.
Results: 60% of the students considered that the sessions of work in equipment were excellent, 40% considered them good. 96% referred one better understanding of the concepts, 70% of the group preferred this one model of learning, 96% considered it more useful as training to solve real problems. The learning of the students evaluated by means of the reading of an Electrocardiogram was of 95%.
Conclusions: The Team Based Learning is useful to develop the abilities of the students and to foment the support among the participants.
