Experimental pilot study to prevent adherences through streptokinase in rodents

ABSTRACT
Objective: To study the efficacy of streptokinase to prevent post-surgical adherences in rats.
Setting: Third level health care hospital.
Design: Pilot, prospective, experimental, transversal study, with control group.
Statistical analysis: SPSS’00 software, Student’s t test. P‹0.05.
Material and methods: Forty-five Wistar male rats, divided in two groups. Group A, control, of 33 rats, and Group B, experimental, of 12 rats. Rats were subjected to the standardized procedure used to produce adherences. Presence or absence of adherences and compromised structures were assessed; adherences were also classified.
Results: All rats (100%) of both groups presented adherences. Assessment of compromised structures revealed a statistically significant difference in group B (treated with intraperitoneal streptokinase), in which the adherences were limited to unpolished structures, whereas in rats of Group A (control), adherences were uniform in all structures. Another statistically significant difference was that group B (treated) only formed loose adherences (Grade I) whereas Group A did not.
Conclusion: Intraperitoneal streptokinase did not inhibit the adherences formation process, but limited the compromised structures (unpolished surface) and decreased their consistency.
