ABSTRACT
Objective. To know the frequency of congenital malformations in neonates born in a general hospital.
Material and methods. In 2,234 neonates born in the hospital, in one year, 69 of them had congenital malformations. This defects were classified according to the approach suggested by Spranger-Opitz.
Results. Eighty six (91.5%) children had major malformations and 8 (8.5%) had minor malformations; the 69 children had a total of 94 defects. The incidence rate in the 2,234 births was 30.9 for thousand born alive. The biggest frequency of malformations happened in women in between 21 to 30 years age. The highest frequency of defects were in relation to cardiovascular disease (34%). Only 15 patients were identify by ultrasound.
Conclusions. Knowing this frequency of malformations in the hospital is now pertinent to improve the mother’s prenatal control, taking in account child in order to reduce the incidence of defects at birth.
