ABSTRACT
Objective: To determine what is the labor ambience or background for the residents at General Surgery. Place: College of Medicine of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México –UNAM). Design: Observational, transversal, analytical. Survey-like. Statistical analysis: Measures of central tendency and test of Pearson’s chi-square. Material and methods: Four hundred and fifty-seven residents of General Surgery that were enrolled at the College of Medicine of the UNAM from the first to the third year were applied two different questionnaires. The first one related to demographic data, and the second one referring to the labor ambience. The evaluated variables were: communication, practices and policies, cooperation and coordination, image and recognition (acknowledgement), execution and evaluation, reputation, supervision, work in itself, training and development, and labor conditions. Results: The residents that fulfilled the inclusion criteria were 413. From them, 75 (18.6%) were women and 338 (81.8%) men. The age group that presented the greatest number of residents was the group going from 27 to 28 years (40%). The prevailing marital status was the single condition (64.4%). The 6% of the residents were foreigners. The average of the level at the career of licentiate was of nine (57.6%), while the 73.7% preferred to follow a subspecialty. The 53.5% considered that the theoretical topics were covered well enough, while for the 66.8% the same consideration was expressed regarding the surgical skills. Eighty-two percent of the group considered that the transmission of humanistic and ethical values was correct. With regard to the professors, they were qualified as good to excellent for the 73% of the consulted people. The image, recognition and the work in itself of the resident at General Surgery were the best qualified (presenting a statistical significance) by the residents who would finish at subspecialty. Conclusions: Lately, the study of the influence of the ambience on the medical performance has acquired a great interest. In this particular case of the General Surgery resident, specially with regard to gender, day after day there is a high tendency to the increase. Therefore, the aspect of medicine feminization is attracting the attention more and more. Obviously, surgery is not the exception. In this study, the 18.6% corresponded to the female sex. The 73.7% of the residents enrolled at General Surgery aim at the final objective of finishing their studies with a subspecialty. In most of the cases, the resident at General Surgery denotes a good labor ambience. His/her image is better appreciated by resident doctors whose final objective is a subspecialty.REFERENCES
