ABSTRACT

Introduction: Schizophrenia is a chronic mental disease which affects not only the patient but their family and social environment. Objective: To apply a Vocational Rehabilitation Program to a group of people who suffer from schizophrenia, in order to achieve work integration. Methods: 24 patients were included; all of which had been evaluated and received medical attention in the Instituto Nacional de Psiquiatría and the Instituto Nacional de Rehabilitación with informed consent on the protocol. An Assisted Work method was used in the study, helping both the patient and direct family members to receive job training. The work profile of the patients was evaluated with the VALPAR method. Both job inclusion and vocational training were provided. Results: 24 patients; from 21 to 55 years or age. Labor outcome: satisfactory: 16; unsatisfactory: 8; work experience: (+) (83%); (-) (17%). Integrated to job training 5, regular jobs 6, self employed 4. Conclusion: Work prognosis in schizophrenic patients is directly related with: psychiatris evaluation, symptomatological stability, therapeutic compliance, positive attitude, and family support. Greater social awareness, employer sensibilization, elimination of work discrimination are required, as well as flexible working hours and a reduction of stress load in the work place.
