ABSTRACT
Fistula-in-ano is one of the most frequent diseases in colorectal consultation. The treatment is always surgical and the fistulotomy resolves most cases with a good success rate. The so-called complex fistula-in-ano require extensively knowledge of the anatomy of the anal region in order to decide if surgery is needed without causing recurrence or incontinence or to use any other alternative methods using endorectal advancement flaps, the use of biodegradable materials, the traditional seton and more recently the denominated LIFT (ligation of intersphincteric fistula tract), although with less chance of success, would solve several fistula cases without altering of the continence mechanism.Even though there are still very few publications about the use of LIFT in fistula-in-ano, there has been generating worldwide interest about this procedure, which breaks the paradigm of always treating the causal crypt, this is why we present the review of this articles, in order to know the current success with its use.
