Electronystagmographic findings in patients with diagnosis of vestibulopathy due to systemic ototoxic drugs

ABSTRACT

Objective: To communicate the main electronystagmographic findings in patients with vestibular damage by systemic ototoxic drugs.
Design: Clinical, non experimental, longitudinal, retrospective and case study.
Material and method: We included all patients diagnosed with systemic ototoxic vestibulopathy who underwent electronystagmographic tests from December 2004 to December 2007 by the department of otorhinolaryngology of the Hospital Juarez.
Results: Forty-eight cases were reviewed. Electronystagmographic parameters most affected were: caloric responses (T°) in 92.5% of the cases, opto-vestibular test (OVT ) in 90% and pure vestibular test (PVT ) in 90%. Associated drugs were gentamicin in 51.4%; cisplatin in 25.71%; amikacin in 20%; and rifampicin + isoniazid (R+H) in 2.8%. In 7.5% of the cases, findings on the electronystagmography (ENG) were normal despite positive clinical data. In 5% of the cases, the alterations in ENG showed a different pattern. Electronystagmographic studies were abnormal in 92.5% of the patients and normal in 7.5%.
Conclusion: The main electronystagmographic alterations found in this study were: bilateral abnormal OVT, depressed PVT and T° with bilateral paresis. This pattern was present in 87.5% of the cases.
