ABSTRACT

Leiomyomata are benign smooth-muscle neoplasms that are very common in certain parts of the body, though quite rare in the oral cavity. They can be divided into three subtypes: solid leiomyoma, vascular leiomyoma, and epitheloid leiomyoma. They usually appear in the 5th and 6th decade of life, with no greater incidence in either sex or race. They are most commonly found on the lip, though can appear in many other locations, including intraosseously.
Clinically they appear as a small (1-2 cm) slowgrowing asymptomatic sessile mass with a firm consistency. The treatment of choice is surgical excision, which results in a very low rate of recurrence and excellent prognosis. We present the case of a 13-year-old male patient with a lip lesion diagnosed as vascular leiomyoma.
