ABSTRACT

Objective: Analyze the current information and results on hiatal hernia repair, and share our experience as surgical group. Methodology: This is a descriptive, longitudinal and retrospective cohort that includes 11 patients between January 2007 and January 2012 with radiological and endoscopic documented hiatal hernia greater than 5 cm, patients underwent laparoscopic hiatal hernia repair with or without mesh. Results: There is no large number of comparative series between laparoscopic and open procedure, likewise, found series and the included by us does not have a large population, and although in the short term it seems that the use of prosthetic materials is a good option in terms of clinical outcomes and prevention of recurrences, must take into consideration the potential complications that so far have been reported and that there are no long-term data reported in the literature. Conclusions: The use of materials prosthesic materials improves the clinical outcome and reduces the recurrence index, however its use has to be decided based on the individual features of each patient and considering the potential risks that have been reported so far.
