Serious tetanus in an intensive care unit

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Although tetanus is entirely preventable is one of the ten causes of death in developing countries.
Objective: To report the rate of morbidity and mortality, complications and treatment of patients with serious tetanus in a developing country.
Design: Descriptive and retrospective study.
Setting: Adult intensive care unit (AICU) of a general hospital, Merida, Yucatan; Mexico.
Patients and methods: The files of all patients with serious tetanus admitted to the AICU from 1st January 1994 to 31th December 2004 were reviewed.
Interventions: None.
Results: During ten years 46 patients (35 men, 11 women, mean age 47 ± 23 years) were registered. ICU stay was 10 ± 9 days, mortality rate 46% and the most important causes of death were multiple organ dysfunction syndrome and pneumonia.
Conclusion: Tetanus is one of the most important problems of health in Yucatan and its mortality rate es high.
