ABSTRACT

Context Smoking is a health problem with more than 1110 millions of smokers in the world causing 3 million 500 thousand deaths every year. Its consumption is related to the increase on cancer, pulmonary diseases, cardiovascular and others. The doctor has an important role on its prevention and complications through the education of the population. However, it has been observed that the doctor in training disregard the information having a high consumption of tobacco.
Material and methods Cross-sectional study on 5th semester medicine students in the University of Guadalajara. The students underwent a survey including an identification file, 33 multiple choice questions and 2 open questions to identify the incidence of smoking, reasons for consumption and general awareness of the consequences.
Results 220 students were interviewed. 118 female (53.6%) and the rest (46.4%) male. Only 28 (12.7%) were active smoker students. The prevalence rate is 127 x 1000 students. The main consequences known by the interviewees were lung cancer (96.8%), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (89.1%) and different types of gastrointestinal cancer. However, diseases with no direct causal relation were identified such as tuberculosis (32.1%), diabetes (26%) and hepatitis (20.98%).
Conclusion Despite the prevalence of smoking in our study was low, there is a lack of awareness by the students about its consequences, it is necessary to implement and better curriculum, which covers the consequences of this habit, as well as informative and preventive activities related to the consumption of tobacco.
