Instability spinal metastatic malignancies.

ABSTRACT

Aim. The goal of treatment is to optimize the quality of life of patients is not designed to add years to life but life to years. Material and methods. We studied 80 patients with metastases to the spine in the Juarez Hospital of Mexico in 11 years in patients 60 years of average age, the affected level is 70% thoracic, lumbar 20% and cervical 10%. Disability was assessed by the Oswestry index. Results. Patients who underwent surgery for spinal instability was field-pathological fracture, spinal compression, which causes severe pain and disability, according to the Oswestry scale of 50 to 60% in the immediate postoperative period improved to 15% and within a five months to 7%, and only a total of seven patients continued with 20% of carelessness in treatment. Conclusions. The treatment of metastatic tumors to the spine that do not cause instability or neurological involvement treated with radiotherapy and chemotherapy depending on tumor type, and only patients with spinal instability, and neurological disabilities will be treated with surgery plus radio and chemotherapy.
