Key words:

Asymptomatic carotid stenosis, claudication of inferior extremities.

ABSTRACT

Objetives: To determine the prevalence of asymptomatic carotid stenosis and also the risk factors associated with the carotid stenosis in patients with claudication of inferior extremities treated in the West National Medical Center from Guadalajara, Jal.
Methods: There were included all the patients treated in the Angiology and Vascular Surgery from the CMNO in the period from November 2009 to May 2010 that had all the inclusion criteria. We realized an ultrasonography in mode B and Doppler study as screening mode including the systolic peak velocity (VPS) and stenosis grade. We also include the cardiovascular risk factors in the analysis.
Results: We analyzed 48 patients with a middle age of 70 years old (range 54-85 years old). 66.7% was male gender and 33.3% female gender. The prevalence founded of the risk factors was: : diabetes mellitus 66.7%, arterial hypertension 83.3%, hypercolesterolemia 25%, hypertriglyceridemia 16.7%, chronic renal failure 16.7%, heart disease 41.7%, smoke antecedent 83.3%, C reactive protein 41.7%.We found a positive correlation between chronic renal failure and carotid stenosis with a P value 0.027. We do not found correlation between the rest of risk factors. The prevalence found of carotid stenosis 50-69% was 25% and 70-99% was 16.7%.
Conclussions: We found our prevalence of carotid stenosis in asmyptomatic patients similar to the reported in the mundial literature. We have found a positive correlation the chronic renal failure and carotid stenosis.
