ABSTRACT

Hashimoto’s encephalopathy was first described in 1966, since then, the literature shows a female-male ratio of presentation of 4:1. In the present article we report a case of a male aged 53 years with no relevant medical history, who began with cognitive impairment and generalized tonic clonic seizures at admission, with Folstein minimental test score of 22/30 points. Laboratories were requested to report anti-thyroglobulin antibodies 1:168, antimicrosomal 1:550.9. The EEG reported decrease in theta waves. The contrast-enhance magnetic resonance imaging did not show enhancement in any brain area. The diagnosis of Hashimoto encephalopathy was formulated. The corticosteroids treatment resolved the clinical and cognitive function.
